Snawsell Seasonal Tours at Barley Hall

Step into the rhythms of medieval life at Barley Hall with our Snawsell Seasonal Tours.

Have you ever wondered how the changing seasons shaped life in Medieval York? What did Christmas look like then compared to now? And how did York’s people celebrate summer?

Join our expert guides as they bring the story of William Snawsell — a coin maker, former Mayor of York, and resident of Barley Hall—to life. Discover how he, his family, and their busy household navigated the celebrations, challenges, and daily routines of the medieval year.

On your journey through our beautifully restored hall, you’ll enjoy immersive storytelling, encounter intriguing scents, and even get the chance to handle real artefacts.

Tour times: 11am and 2pm (subject to staff availability). Each tour lasts 30–40 minutes and is included in your admission to Barley Hall. An optional sensory experience featuring pleasant scents is also available.
