Get Involved
York Archaeology Attractions offers fantastic opportunities for you to get involved
You can take part either through placements or by becoming a volunteer. Both incorporate project activities involving all of our different attractions.
Volunteering
Have you got a passion for history or archaeology? Would you like to help us engage visitors with York’s rich medieval heritage and share a love of the past?
Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York, uncovered in the 1980s and restored by York Archaeological Trust to its 15th-century glory.
Our Barley Hall volunteers help us to tell the story of this incredible building and the people who once lived there, welcoming and helping our visitors to make themselves at home and discover and experience life in medieval York.
Who Can Join?
As with many of our roles you do not need existing archaeological, historical or guiding knowledge or experience, we will help you to learn everything you need to know. We welcome expressions of interest to join the team from anyone with enthusiasm for medieval or social history and a desire to contribute their time to enhance our visitors’ experience. Volunteers at Barley Hall will also need to enjoy talking to a wide range of people and be able to offer a bright, friendly welcome to all.
When Can I Enquire?
You can apply via our online portal here.
To ensure all volunteers who join us are given all the training and support they need we have a system of regular intakes throughout the year which offer an opportunity to join the team in a group of other new volunteers.
Within 28 days of applying you’ll receive an invite to our next group application meeting, giving you a chance to meet the team and other applicants and learn more about the volunteering roles on offer.
You will be given a chance to read our Privacy Notice before applying to volunteer/undertake a placement with us. You can also click here to read this.

Placements
Barley Hall Room Guide Placements learn how to engage with visitors to this beautifully restored Medieval Town House. Room Guides welcome our visitors and encourage them to make themselves at home, providing engagement opportunities to learn more about life for the inhabitants of this building in the 15th-century and the discovery and restoration of this incredible building.
The 2-week placement opportunity is great for someone who would like involvement in our Room Guide role but might have difficulty committing to regular volunteering over a longer period, or who wants to gain experience in social history and heritage interpretation at Barley Hall over our busy periods.
You can learn more about the placement role here.
