What to Expect
Barley Hall is a restored medieval town house in the heart of York. Tucked away just off Stonegate in Coffee Yard, it has a fascinating history. It has been home to a Lord Mayor of York and owned by monks. Much later, it was used as a plumber’s workshop and showroom before being rediscovered in the 1980s. It was then bought and restored by York Archaeology, formerly known as York Archaeological Trust.
Today, you can explore the house at your own pace and discover how people in medieval York lived and worked. Look out for the stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames and magnificent Great Hall as you explore the building. Along the way, discover more about the people who lived and worked here. What was a monier and why was this an important role? What was life like for servants in the medieval period? And what was here before the snickelway – the footpath that separates the ground floor?
While you’re here, explore our current exhibition, Beasts at Barley Hall. Why would a porcupine’s quill be found in medieval York? What does a 15th-century dog collar have to do with a window in York Minster? Uncover these mysteries and more through hands-on activities and audio stories as you explore the hall.
Discover one of York’s hidden gems and step back into the city’s medieval past at Barley Hall.
Please Note:
Between 24 and 31 October, Barley Hall will become Haunted Hall as part of our seasonal events. During this period, access to the Hall will be limited to our Haunted Hall: Ghost Hunters and Haunted Hall: Dark Tales events.
If you are booking our multi-attraction Pastport ticket, Barley Hall is not available during this time. You can book a date for Barley Hall before or after Haunted Hall (dates can be rearranged at a later time if needed), or please call our Reservations team to book over the phone (01904 615505) without the need to add a time for Barley Hall.
For more information, please visit our Events page.
There will also be some disruption on 23rd and 1st November while we transform the Hall.
It’s not Haunted…I’m the original owner
I don’t appreciate peasants using the snickleway as a shortcut
Where’s the other wing? There was definitely another wing when I lived here.
